Words Matter

Greetings in the Name of our Lord,

We are less than two weeks from the season of Lent. For Christians around the world, Lent is the 40-day discipline of prayer, repentance, and self-examination as we prepare our lives for the celebration of Easter.

This year, during Lent, there will be several study and worship opportunities to grow in our faith and as a church family. Check out the details for every opportunity by visiting our adult ministries page.

Pastor Jana and I will be offering two Studies from 6:30-8:00 p.m. each evening of the Lenten Wednesday Dinners beginning Wednesday, February 25. Please sign up as soon as possible so we can make sure everyone has materials.

  • I will be following the Sunday sermon series, The Message of Jesus: Words that Changed the World. The sermon series and study will be based on Adam Hamilton’s book by the same title. We will explore Jesus’ preaching on the Kingdom of God, the Sermon on the Mount, the parables, Jesus’s “I am” sayings in the Gospel of John, and more. Jesus's message is not only life-changing, but world-changing. To sign up email me or sign up here.

  • Pastor Jana’s study will be based on the book An Unlikely Lent by Rachel Billups. Step into the story of Easter to notice the unexpected – in the silence, the side characters, and the questions. The resurrection is not just a past event, but an invitation into something new. Email Pastor Jana to sign up.

This Sunday, I will be preaching from James 3:5-12 – Words Matter. James shares with us that words can cut, and they can heal. This sermon reminds us there is power in the words we speak. Words shape and define our lives and the lives of others. Words reveal the presence of our faith in our life. James uses the images of a fire that destroys and a spring that gives life.

James says that we should be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger. In other words, make sure our mind is engaged before we engage our mouth.

See you Sunday!
